Father pitched in the Majors for 14 seasons with Boston (1992-94), Philadelphia (1994-95), Toronto (1996-2001), Los Angeles-NL (2002-03), New York-AL (2004-05), San Diego (2005) and Florida (2005)... When he was a kid, his parents had a communications mix-up and left him alone at the Yankees’ Tampa Complex during Spring Training … he had to ask Randy Johnson to get ahold of his parents... He and his dad are the only other father/son duo to both play for the Padres along with Tony Gwynn and Tony Gwynn Jr... Was a four-time varsity letterman in baseball at Trinity College in Ontario, Canada … lettered twice in hockey and volleyball... Played for Team Canada 18-U for three years, competing in two World Championships and a World Qualifier (Seoul, Taichung and Cartagena)... In 2014, became the first freshman pitcher to start Opening Day for Stanford University since Mike Mussina in 1998 … led the Cardinal in IP (110.2) and SO (98) and was named the Pac-12 Freshman of the Year and to the All-Pac-12 Team... Limited to 19 starts with Cleveland due to two stints on the 15-day injured list (right shoulder inflammation), June 2-30 and July 6-Sept. 1... Made 13 starts in the first half, going 2-6 with a 6.45 ERA (67.0 IP, 48 ER), the highest first-half ERA of his career … walked 22 and fanned 38 while allowing eight home runs... Over six starts in the second half (all in September), went 2-1 with a 2.76 ERA (32.2 IP, 10 ER) while holding opponents to a .230 average (28-for-122) … ERA ranked seventh in the AL in the month, tied for 10th in the Majors (min. 30 IP)... Split his first professional season between the AZL Padres (R), Tri-City (A) and Fort Wayne (A), pitching to a combined 0-5 record with a 5.11 ERA (21 ER, 37.0 IP) with 46 SO against eight BB his 12 games (all starts)...Posted a 3.57 ERA (14 ER, 35.1 IP) through his first 11 starts between the AZL Padres, Tri-City and Fort Wayne before allowing a career-high seven earned runs in his final start of the season on 9/5 at Bowling Green.
